Tomiyuki Sakuta

Tomiyuki Sakuta (b. 1960 Yamagata prefecture, Japan) studied BA Tokyo Zokei University of Art (1980-1984). Selected group exhibitions include: 7th International Printmaking Bienal do Douro, Portugal (2014); 2nd International Mezzotint Festival, Ekaterinburg, Russia (2013) and Tallinn 4th Drawing Triennial, Tallinn, Estonia (2012). Solo exhibitions include: Bunkamura Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (2015); BWA Gallery, Kielce, Poland (2014) and Atrier de Ille, Quebec, Canada (2013). Recent prizes include: International Biennial Print Exhibit, ROC, Taiwan (Silver Prize, 2014); International Print Biennial Varna, Bulgaria (Grand Prix of the City of Varna, 41st International Print Award “Carmen Arozena”, Spain (First Prize, 2013). He lives and works in Japan.

Sakuta made the series of etchings Friends during an artist-in-residence project. He asked the people he met if he could draw their portrait. By focusing on people was meeting for the first time he aimed to capture his first impression of their character. He also gave them each a name using Chinese kanji characters. Each portrait was made as an etching allowing him to give one copy to each person that he had drawn.
